Tea-Toning Silver Gelatin Prints

Tea-Toning Experiment:

Formula and Steps:
1. Brew about 4 or 5 bags of (preferred) black tea and let cool to about 75° C
2. Stir the tea gently for 5 minutes.
3. Measure 500ml of the brew and pour into a stainless steel tray.
*Since steel is a conductor of electricity, your tray will help the tea solution to cool down moderately, giving the more potent, hotter tea more time to operate in its tonal range of efficacy.
4. Slide the print in the tea
(What is the color of the tea… Is it foggy and dark or see through?). Make note of the strength of your solution. In a weaker brew, toning will take place over a longer time with the stronger, darker tea solution showing results in the highlight area of your print within a half an hour to an hour
* For a more dramatic split tone, use sepia or selenium and other color-toned prints.
Use a very mild bleach solution:

5. Make sure to wash your prints for a minimum of 30 minutes. Insert prints into a 85° F medium strong brew. Agitate the tray for 2 minutes. At this point, it is wise to keep the tray and its content still, as to keep the tea above 75°F.
*This should work particularly well with a good warmtone paper.
6. Leave your print in the tea for 30 minutes (light-brown effect
in shadows) or a few hours (dark-brown or mustard yellow effect in shadows)

*Enjoy
